Robert Freid, President & Principal Consultant

Robert has over 20 years of management experience with advanced manufacturing companies. Before founding Contract Manufacturing Consultants, Inc. in 1999, Robert worked for Solectron Corporation, one of the world's largest contract manufacturers. He was responsible for all sales and program management activities for the Everett WA subsidiary which produced SMT printed circuit boards and complete products for IBM, HP and other major accounts. His work included coordinating global supply chain solutions, cost modeling and negotiating complex multi-year contracts, assisting in customer audits, planning NPI ramps and managing cross-functional customer support teams, and participating in operational reviews and corporate business strategy development.

Robert began his career as a manufacturing engineer with the General Electric Company. After earning an MBA, he joined McKinsey & Company's Cleveland office as a management consultant where he helped resolve key business strategic and operating problems for major industrial companies such as Owens-Corning, Bendix and Eaton Corporation. Robert then joined Hillenbrand Industries in Batesville, Indiana and for four years served as Vice President of Strategy and MIS for its largest subsidiary, a $400 million consumer products company where he created company growth plans and led the management information systems department. Later, Robert relocated back to Silicon Valley to join Asyst Technologies as Director of Marketing and OEM Relations, and helped establish the company as a leader in automated wafer handling equipment.

Robert received a B.S. Degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA from Stanford University.

Robert makes technical presentations at industry conferences and is quoted in industry publications on topics related to supply chain management and outsourcing of electronics products. He is a panel member of Circuit.net newsletter “Ask the Experts” on questions involving PCBA manufacturing; also advisory board member to the Supply Chain, Transportation & Logistics master’s degree program at the University of Washington

Advisors

CMC’s long-standing network of advisors are EMS experts in manufacturing, test engineering, sourcing and others working in the industry. Advisors are engaged if needed for assistance with particular subject matter, e.g. current best practices and equipment for X-ray testing, recommendations for trusted sources of low volume, high precision metal parts in Shenzhen, China. They consult often for only a few hours but occasionally for longer periods. Advisors are compensated by CMC and work anonymously.
